River City Bank to Close Carrollton Branch
Accounts will be transferred to Rome
by D. Tim Clark
February 2, 2010
This past Friday, January 29th, 2010, Carroll County, Georgia lost a long-standing banking institution, First National Bank of Georgia. Simultaneously, a new banking powerhouse entered the local marketplace with the arrival of deep-pocketed Community & Southern Bank.
But local banking news did not end there.
On Monday, Roger F. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of River City Bank in Rome, Georgia sent letters to Carrollton-area customers letting them know their local bank branch was closing at 5pm on May 5th, 2010.
River City Bank's Carrollton, Georgia branch is located at 2115 Maple Street in Carrollton, not far from the University of West Georgia at the intersection of the Highway 166 By-Pass and Maple Street.
Smith's letter informed customers that "All accounts opened at this location will be automatically transferred to and serviced by our main office in Rome." Additionally, ".. online banking services will continue to allow you to access your accounts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
While Smith thanked customers for their business with the Rome-based bank, he also stated, ".. we will be more than happy to continue serving your banking needs."
However, Rome is 60 miles from Carrollton Why would anyone continue to do business with a bank lacking a local community presence? Why would anyone choose to do business with a bank located 60 miles away?
Time will likely answer these questions.
